Andre Evon McRae

December 31, 1949 — September 25, 2024

Andre Evon Fetherson McRae, 74, of Charlotte, transitioned to be with the Lord in the early morning hours on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte.

Evon was born December 31, 1949, in Charlotte, NC to the late Anderson Massey and Rosa Lee Camp Jefferson. She grew up in the Brooklyn area of Historic Charlotte.

In addition to her parents, Evon was preceded in death by her sister, Willie Mae Bynum; her beloved aunts, Curley Ann Davis and Charlie Mae Potts (East Stonewall member); and uncles, Luther Davis and George Walker.

Mother Evon was a devoted mother, wife, loved one, and friend. Professionally, she was also known as “Andre.” Over the years, Evon worked in various industries throughout Charlotte.

Evon was a proud graduate of Second Ward High School, the first public high school for blacks in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. She received her professional certifications as a Nursing Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Notary at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. She worked for years in retail administration as a buyer at Ivey’s Department Store in downtown Charlotte. Her love of photos led her to work at Delmar Photo Studios in Matthews, NC, where she was known for her attention to detail and keen eye for retouching photos. Later, she went on to serve the Charlotte community as a certified nursing assistant at Presbyterian Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center, Kelly Assisted Living, and throughout numerous health care facilities and homes.

Evon was a proud lifetime member of East Stonewall A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was known for her decades of service on the Kitchen Committee. She was a member of the Missionary Department and a choir member in her younger years. Her mother, Rosa Lee Fetherson, was also a long standing member of East Stonewall. Evon was an active member of the Silver Sneakers organization. She also volunteered at other churches and organizations; helping to prepare meals and in administrative capacities.

Evon lived life to its fullest and was a 3- time cancer survivor. Affectionately known by many as “Mama Evon” and “Aunt Evon”; she was an excellent

food technician, famous for her lemon pound cake, and other delectables. Whether it was at church events, family reunions, weddings, or special celebrations at home; she prepared catered meals with a smile and caring heart.

Evon took after her mother and was an avid fashionista with a sophisticated and regal style. She had an awesome eye for fashion. She excelled at whatever she put her mind to, including crafts and sewing. She enjoyed long road trips, shopping, fun group outings, puzzles, card games, dancing, and singing. Evon loved good conversations daily, often checking in with loved ones and friends.

Forever cherishing her life are her son, Cerulean Ameer Fetherson; grandson, Elijah Ameer Crawford; great grandson, Cameron Delane; husband, Alphonso McRae of Mt. Gilead, NC; beloved aunts, Louise “Honey” Culp White of Fort Mill, SC and Geraldine Walker of Silver Springs, Maryland; sister, Mary Ann Washington Massey and brother Dr. Cashe “Phaue” Featherson (Debbie) both of Philadelphia, PA; sister-cousin Curley Potts Watts of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Dr. Mantel Featherson (Michelle), great nephews, Micah and Matthew Featherson; McRae and Mason nieces of Charlotte, NC; and a host of other family members, goddaughters, play sisters, and a community of loved ones and friends that exists throughout the Carolinas and the nation.
